Ilya Voronov

The Lord of Vranograd

"I made sure. I'm not a cruel man, Yara. I don't want to hurt anyone in this village. But I need you to understand that I will, if I have to, and that the scope of what I'm willing to do is larger than what you're looking at right now."

Ilya, to Yara, the day he arrived at her house in Marzanna's Reach

Biography

Ilya Voronov is the latest inheritor of a grievance twelve generations old. He is descended from Kazimir's brother, whose line has spent centuries diminished by an immortal ancestor who will not vacate the throne. Ilya has spent fifteen years engineering Kazimir's removal: building political alliances, placing agents inside Morozvast, and searching for the hidden death that is the only weapon capable of ending the Deathless King. He is motivated by a mixture of legitimate political ambition and inherited bitterness, and he does not distinguish between the two.

Appearance

Late forties, though his bearing adds years. Clean-shaven. Dark hair graying at the temples. His coat is well-made, cut close, expensive in a way that tries not to show it. He holds his gloves in one hand. His gaze finds targets like a compass needle finding north. His body doesn't move while his eyes lock on. He smiles in a way that is almost a smile but not quite.

Personality

Ilya is rational, patient, and ruthless in a way that never raises its voice. He makes threats sound like observations. He presents coercion as partnership. He is not cruel for the sake of cruelty. He burns a farm to demonstrate capability, ensures no one is inside, and frames the act as a regrettable necessity. This makes him more dangerous, not less. His self-image is that of a liberator, freeing the North from a frozen tyrant.

Abilities

Ilya has no supernatural abilities. His weapons are intelligence, influence, preparation, patience, and leverage. He builds networks of agents and informants. He operates through layers: every arrangement is three levels deep, each one verifiable to a point and vague beyond it.

Key Facts

He has a deadline. The council of territorial lords meets in summer. If the Deathless King is not removed before then, the political window closes.
His men wear gray. Not uniforms, exactly, but matched well enough to signal coordination.
He knows Yara's brother's name, his daily route, and what he reads. He assembled this before he arrived.
